Green Star (Green Building Council Australia)

During our ‘Green Rating’ articles series, so far we have been discussing the LEED system (click here) and
the BREEAM rating system and its assessment method (click here). This week we will provide an
introduction to ‘Green Star’, the rating system set up by the Green Building Council of Australia.
At REALTEQ we have developed innovative software that helps tenants, landlords and advisors compare
and negotiate assets on their “Green Features”, as part of the overall RFP process. In below article, you
will find an introduction into the Green Star rating system.

Green Star (Green Building Council Australia)

Green Star was launched by the Green Building Counsil of Australia in 2003, and is Australia’s only
national voluntary rating system for buildings, fitouts and communities. Green Star uses registered
certification trade marks which are approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
Generally Green Star-certified project can 1 :

  • Use 66% less electricity than average Australian Buildings

  • Use 51% less potable water than the average Australian Building built to meet minimum
    industry requirements

  • Produce 55% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than average Australian buildings
The Green Star taking scale goes from 1 to 6 stars to measure and reward projects that achieve best
practice or above in their sustainability outcomes:

For each type of project the Green Star rating tool assesses different categories, however for Green
Start Buildings, the following different categories are used:

  • Responsible
  • Healthy
  • Resilient
  • Positive
  • Places
  • Nature
  • Leadership
  • People

In addition to the building certification, they also offer certification schemes for Communities, Design &
As Built, Interiors and Performance.

Next week we will discuss the BCA Green Mark system in more detail and how it assesses the ‘Green
Features’ of a building.
